HSK 4 is the minimum level for most Chinese-taught programmes. Here is the plan our students use to pass it in eight months.
What you need to know
HSK 4 requires about 1,200 words and solid listening comprehension. Most universities ask for at least 180 out of 300 points.
Months 1–3: the basics
Pinyin and tones, the first 300–400 characters, simple dialogues. Three lessons a week with a teacher and 30 minutes of daily flashcard review.
Months 4–6: HSK 3
HSK 3 grammar, graded readers and your first practice tests. Passing HSK 3 in month four or five is a good checkpoint.
Months 7–8: exam preparation
A full HSK 4 mock test every week and a review of listening and writing mistakes. In the final month, focus only on the test format and vocabulary.
