Dorm or flat: what to choose in Istanbul

Istanbul is huge, and the commute to campus can take an hour. We compare dormitories and flats for first-year students.

State dormitories

KYK dormitories are the cheapest option, but places for international students are limited and you should apply right after enrolment.

Private dormitories

A twin room with meals costs $300–600 a month. Everything is included and close to campus, but rules are strict and there is a curfew.

A flat

A room in a shared flat starts at $250 plus utilities. You get freedom, but also a deposit, furniture and a contract in Turkish. We usually recommend a dormitory in the first year and a shared flat from the second.
